The inquisition in Malta was a bit of a damp squib. Hardly any torture was involved and they went so far as to have a doctor present to certify that it wansn't hurting too much. The punishments handed down were also pretty light - bread and water for 30 days, lots of prayer, regular confessional time, occasional terms of imprisonment. No floggings, no beheading. It was almost fun.
But nevertheless there were holding cells where people languished for long periods and in these they reduced their bopredom by carving 'grafitti' on the walls. Mostly ships, perhaps dreaming of escape, some delightful decorative pieces and some cave-like paintings. Here's a few of them.

And finally a message from 1806 which appears to say in English: " So I am old .......... send his two eyes may drop out."
